Staff Computational Engineer, 3D CAD

Xometry is seeking a highly skilled Staff Computational Engineer with a strong background processing three-dimensional models to help create the next generation of automated design for manufacturing (DFM) tools. In this role, you will analyze three-dimensional models for manufacturing feasibility and risk by combining underlying features with real world manufacturing constraints. This role requires someone with a strong understanding of computational geometry, algorithm analysis and code design.

Responsibilities:

  • Design, develop, and implement computational algorithms to solve complex engineering problems related to manufacturing processes (e.g., quoting, optimization, quality control).
  • Design, develop and deploy algorithms to extract geometric features from 2D and 3D CAD models.
  • Design, develop and deploy algorithms to detect Design for Manufacturability (DFM) issues of 2D and 3D CAD models.
  • Identify practical solutions to problems involving 2D and 3D geometry, topology, numerical analysis, manipulation of curves, surfaces and boundary representation topology.
  • Leverage machine learning and artificial intelligence techniques to improve efficiency and decision-making within the manufacturing platform.
  • Collaborate with operations and product teams to understand critical issues and develop novel solutions.
  • Collaborate with data scientists and software engineers to integrate computational solutions into Xometry's production workflows.
  • Document code and algorithms for maintainability and knowledge sharing.
  • Stay up-to-date on the latest advancements in computational engineering and related fields.

Requirements:

  • M.S. or PhD degree in applied math, physics, computer science, or engineering required.
  • 8+ years of progressive experience in applying computational methods to solve engineering problems with a proven track record of success.
  • Demonstrated experience in using CAD/CAE systems: surface modeling, solid modeling, part/assembly modeling, drafting.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing geometric modeling kernel, especially working with analytical geometry, parametric modeling, freeform geometry (NURBS, spline surfaces, Bezier curves), topological data structures (B-Rep scheme), geometry healing and repair, high-performance data structures and algorithms.
  • Participation in the development of 3D modeling applications, like SolidEdge, SmartPlant3D, SurfaceWorks, Autodesk Inventor, Pro-Engineer, SolidWorks, ACIS is a plus.
  • Demonstrated experience with HOOPS Exchange API, PRC and DXF format and specifications.
  • Research experience in computational geometry, differential geometry, computational fabrication, computational dynamics, or related fields.
  • Proficient in linear algebra, multivariable calculus, numerical methods, differential equations and other areas of scientific computation, like floating point arithmetic and numerical error analysis.
  • Familiarity with industry-specific standards (e.g., ISO, ASME) and guidelines for CAD/CAE software.
  • Strong knowledge of manufacturing processes and materials science.
  • Fluent in C++ (C+/14/17), including tools like CMake, GDB, SWIG, etc.
  • Experience in Python, Cython, numpy, numba and cloud computing platforms a plus
  • Proficiency in software engineering best practices, including object-oriented design, code versioning, and testing.
  • Strong documentation skills for developing user manuals, technical reports, and internal documentation to support maintainability and reproducibility.

THE ROLE:

The 3D-IC design and SoC design construction CAD team provides automated environments for industry leading 3D stack generation and validation. The flows provide design element creation, port assignment and pattern generation, tile optimization, clock and power distribution, high-performance bus implementation, and timing budgeting. We evaluate, procure, and deploy technologies from industry leading EDA vendors inside a flow framework. Innovation is applied from silicon to the complete 3D-IC system stack. This role will be a part of a global team working in concert with project design teams from North America, China, and India. You will work directly with the global CAD organization and project teams to understand the design requirements and deliver innovative solutions using EDA tools and custom in-house capabilities. In this highly visible role, your primary responsibilities will include:

  • Development of custom EM/IR solutions which scale with accuracy and capacity challenges.

  • Streamline and automate EM/IR flow with ownership of the entire flow.

  • Support and collaborate with design groups (Physical-design and integration, Circuit-design / Power / Package & System / Technology) on their EM/IR requirements for various post layout flows.

Primary responsibilities of this member of the engineering staff are to support Program Managers and technology development projects in the form of day-to-day project management to ensure customer deliverables and internal development project deliverables are successful and remain on schedule. A detail-oriented 3D Print Operator will operate and maintain our VX1000 HSS high-speed binder jetting system and print processing protocols. This role is essential to our digital-to-cast workflow, supporting the production of high-resolution polymer patterns for fine art casting. The role requires the ability to work with and coordinate various processes to ensure equipment operation specifications are being met within the print room. Training and support on the operation and maintenance of these machines will be provided by the manufacturer at the time of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Operate and monitor the VX1000 HSS during print cycles, ensuring consistent layer times, high edge sharpness, and surface quality
  • Perform light maintenance and routine upkeep of the printer, including cleaning, calibration, and basic troubleshooting
  • Stock and manage consumable materials, including polymer powders and binders (e.g., PA12, PP, TPU), ensuring optimal material quality and availability
  • Process printed components, including depowering, blasting, and preparing patterns for mold-making or casting
  • Coordinate the print queue in alignment with workshop schedules and production priorities
  • Maintain accurate logs of print jobs, material usage, and maintenance activities to support traceability and process reliability
  • Support digital workflows, including basic file preparation and job setup using slicing or printer-specific software
