job summary:the assistant vice president (avp) of operations' responsibilities include, but are not limited to, providing support to the vice president (vp) for finance and operations/chief financial officer (cfo) for lamar institute of technology (lit), lamar state college orange (lsco), and lamar state college port arthur (lscpa).the primary focus of job duties includes supporting the cfo in a complex organizational structure in carrying out certain responsibilities which include certain accounting duties and support to various departments within the finance and operations division as assigned by the cfo. the assistant vice president of operations reports to the vice president for finance and operations/chief financial officer.this avp position is a "shared service" position that provides equitable services to lit, lsco, and lscpa. it is an exempt, staff appointment that serves three campuses and will require travel. the position will mainly be housed at lit in beaumont, texas.duties and responsibilities:

  • provide financial administration support as related to the texas connection consortium (tcc) as administered by one of the colleges by ensuring proper internal controls, providing accounting support, and attending meetings.
  • provide not for profit accounting and operational support related to the foundation at the request of the cfo.
  • lead the auxiliary operations of the colleges(lscpa and lit), including cafe and dormitories, as related to financial matters and provide updates to cfo.
  • provide daily support to procurement services in routine matters under the leadership of the cfo.
  • provide daily support to safety services in routine matters under the leadership of the cfo.
  • provide daily support to human resources in routine matters under the leadership of the cfo.
  • assist in modifying and implementing agency finance and operations policies and procedures, as needed.
  • provide ad hoc support on complex financial matters to financial services, fiscal management services, and student business service at the discretion of the cfo and/or at the request of the avp of finance.
  • provide financial administration related to pay applications on construction projects for financial compliance matters.
  • provide financial administration support by attending construction meetings related to financial compliance matters and provide updates to the cfo.
  • provide financial administration support by monitoring the proper closeout of construction projects in collaboration with other departments and ensure the amount of project costs is accurate.
  • provide administrative support as related to the texas state university system (tsus) shared business services (sbs) matters as advised by the cfo.
  • assist with the timely reporting of all financial administrative construction reporting to tsus and state agency reports including mp1, cip, and quarterly tsus updates.
  • attend ad hoc meetings as requested by the cfo.
  • attend college-related events and activities, as requested by the cfo.
  • support and comply with institutional policies as well as state and federal regulations regarding higher education.
  • maintain professional and technical knowledge and awareness of upcoming changes, trends and implementations by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; and participating in professional societies, particularly within the higher education profession as assigned.
  • other related duties and projects, assigned by the cfo, which arise on a daily basis in a complex organizational structure.

minimum qualifications:

  • bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited four-year university or college with a degree in accounting
  • ten or more years of work experience in accounting with at least five of those years in a supervisory capacity
  • demonstrated knowledge of accounting principles and understanding of governmental accounting standards board (gasb) requirements
  • strong accounting, leadership, and motivational skills
  • demonstrated knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (gaap)
  • excellent time management skills, strong interpersonal and communication skills, and a keen ability to solve complex problems
  • proven record of planning, scheduling, and managing deadlines, projects, and assignments
  • advanced computer skills that support the efficient use of the internet, microsoft office suite applications, databases, spreadsheets, work order system, and other software specific to the position
  • ability to work in a complex organizational structure

preferred qualifications:

  • masters in business administration or accounting degree
  • higher education accounting experience in the state of texas
  • current certified public accountant (cpa) license
