Full Time Faculty Position in Mycology, Division of Infectious Diseases
the university of alabama at birmingham heersink school of medicine (uab hsom) seeks to fill a faculty position in the renowned division of infectious diseases (id), with specific focus on mycology. roles for this position will likely include clinical care for immunocompromised patients seen in the uab immunocompromised host infectious disease (ich/id) service, participating in a fungal disease- centric weekly clinic, leading and/or participating in research focused on mycology, and participating in educational activities with the id fellows. depending on previous achievements, this faculty member may be a candidate for an endowed position in the heersink uab hsom and/or grow into a leadership position for the central unit of the mycoses study group (msg). associate professors or professors with a variety of skill sets and outstanding track-record of accomplishments in mycology will be preferred.
the successful candidate will be expected to nurture and grow the research enterprise in mycology and the msg through collaborations with federal and state agencies; diagnostic and pharmaceutical entities; the uab fungal reference lab (through collaboration with dr. sixto leal and the uab seblab ); national and international societies; and study groups. this individual will be expected to work in a coordinated fashion with the leadership of the non-profit arm of the msg, the mycoses study group education and research consortium (msgerc). as currently envisioned, the successful candidate is effectively the face of the research endeavors of the msg.
the division of infectious diseases is led by dr. martin rodriguez. the division is the highest funded division within the dom, both in national institutes of health funding and in total funding. with $45m in fy24 research expenditures, the division s research portfolio consists of a broad range of research. interdisciplinary collaborations between basic and clinical faculty are a strong suit of uab hsom, and the school offers a well-developed infrastructure for cross-cutting research in inflammation, infection, and immunity. the division was founded with a mission for outstanding training; that culture has been sustained as a top teaching service within the department and as the best consult service at uab hospital based on internal institutional surveys repeatedly. because uab hospital is the sole quaternary referral hospital and the safety net hospital for more than seven million people, the division operates in an environment with a unique depth of care, playing a critical role in serving a broad underserved population.
