position purpose

the internal control & data quality specialist is responsible for supporting the credit union's risk management, compliance, and quality control functions through internal monitoring, data validation, and regulatory oversight. this position plays a critical role in promoting operational integrity by reviewing data quality, assisting with bsa/aml and audit functions, and maintaining training programs that align with current and emerging regulatory standards. the ideal candidate demonstrates strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and a collaborative approach to cross-functional responsibilities.


essential functions and basic duties


  1. ensures professional and effective communication with members and internal stakeholders.
  2. responds to front-line inquiries or concerns in a timely manner.
  3. prioritizes requests based on factors such as member presence and time sensitivity.
  4. escalates complex or high-risk issues to management as appropriate.
  5. conducts internal reviews to support operational integrity.
  6. utilizes credit union systems to perform research and maintain accurate documentation.
  7. reports findings and provides actionable recommendations for improvement.
  8. uses the audit tracking system to monitor and follow up on corrective actions in a timely manner.
  9. recommends changes to the internal audit plan as needed.
  10. performs internal monitoring to ensure compliance and data accuracy.
  11. reviews bsa-related reports, including large cash transactions, negotiable instrument logs, and wire activity.
  12. verifies that address and file maintenance reports are being approved according to policy.
  13. identifies and reports data quality issues or inconsistencies to management.
  14. maintains the credit union's regulatory training curriculum.
  15. assigns and tracks completion of bsa training for staff.
  16. assigns and tracks completion of required regulatory training.
  17. develops training materials that reflect current and emerging regulatory changes.
  18. supports bsa/aml compliance and reporting.
  19. assists with the preparation and filing of ctrs and sars.
  20. reviews ofac alerts for potential matches or red flags.
  21. collaborates with the compliance officer to understand bsa/aml methodologies.
  22. reviews alerts generated by the bsa/aml system (e.g., verafin).
  23. performs additional duties as assigned.
  24. stays current with regulatory changes and industry best practices.
  25. assists with special investigations, audits, or internal reviews.
  26. collaborates professionally with internal teams on cross-departmental projects.
  27. completes other tasks as assigned by leadership.

requirements:

qualifications


education and experience: associate's degree in business or equivalent experience in a financial institution

  • preferred.
  • 2+ years of experience in internal controls, audit, compliance or a similar role within a financial institution
  • experience with bsa/aml systems such as verafin is a plus


knowledge, and skills: strong understanding of credit union or bank operations, regulatory compliance, and internal control frameworks.


  • excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • attention to detail and commitment to data integrity.
