job summary
service director of midwifery allied health at denver health will be a master's prepared advanced practice nurse from an accredited school of nursing with completion of an accredited nurse midwifery program. the director will have a demonstrated reputation of excellence in clinical care, leadership, teaching, and mentoring.
the director will have oversight of all care delivered by certified nurse midwives (cnm) and designated apps in the department of obstetrics & gynecology at denver health. the director will provide leadership with the chair of obstetrics and gynecology in an integrated practice environment. specifically, the director will provide overall strategic guidance of the midwifery team and will work closely with physician and nursing leadership. the director will have responsibility for strategic planning, clinical services, professional performance, business performance, regulatory compliance, education, and departmental culture. the director will be responsible for advancing a culture of excellence in an integrated midwifery service. the director will be dedicated to performance expectations including the provision of the highest quality patient care and consistency in clinical care standards, driven by patient safety requirements and clinical outcomes monitoring.
this director role is eligible for a leadership stipend consistent with denver health policy.
essential functions:
clinical expectations:
- lead and participate in clinical quality initiatives focused on improving the patient experience, patient safety clinical outcomes, enhancing systems to assure timeliness and efficiency and assuring quality while maintaining fiscal responsibility. areas of responsibility include labor and delivery, postpartum, obstetric emergency department, and outpatient clinical sites.
- promote and oversee development of critical pathways, protocols and practice guidelines that promote quality, cost-effective care for the patient population.
- ensure that appropriate quality improvement standards/metrics are established, maintained, and reported for the midwifery service and advanced practice providers.
- ensure the application of best practices, incorporating regulatory requirements at the local, state, and national level; utilize benchmarking and data analysis from applicable sources.
- oversite and promotion of internal data collection and research.
- drive innovation in care management and establish efficient operational infrastructure in partnership with the chair of obstetrics and gynecology to optimize resource allocation and timeliness.
- time will be spent providing full-scope midwifery clinical care as the needs of the service dictates.
- maintain and enhance professional growth and development. maintain a working knowledge of applicable current medical literature.
- precept nurse practitioner, physician assistant, and medical students, residents and fellows by following denver health guidelines for trainees.
- develop, conduct and/or evaluate formal or informal health education programs for students in area(s) of expertise.

- assume joint responsibility with denver health administration for compliance with requirements and standards of regulatory agencies and accreditation organizations, including preparation for and participation in relevant surveys.

education:
- master's degree graduate of a nationally accredited midwife degree program. required
work experience:
- 4-6 years as a full-scope midwife required and
- 4-6 years this should include some experience with high-risk obstetric patients and triage required and
- 1-3 years preferred of leadership experience.
