US-Financial Counseling Rep I

The Financial Counselor will be responsible for counseling patients or parties responsible for payment. The Patient Financial Counselor will educate patients on their responsibilities and potential options. The PFC is responsible for accurately and compassionately explaining to the patient their financial obligations during the financial counseling session. In addition, the counselor must obtain any necessary pre-certifications or authorizations and assist with any financing or third-party applications.

This position is ONSITE Monday through Friday 9am - 5:30pm

In this role, the successful candidate must display a strong sense of patient care and attention to detail.

Here's what you will experience working as a Financial Counselor :

  • Explain financial responsibilities for services received payment options and collection procedures to patients or parties responsible for payment.

  • Counsel patients regarding insurance benefits and recommend alternative sources of payment and financial assistance when appropriate.

  • Contact insurance carriers or other sources and act as an advocate for the patient.

  • Initiate process for collecting prepays due and perform follow up activity to insure maximum collection is achieved.

  • Identify hospital, public and private financial assistance programs for patients unable to meet their financial obligations.

  • Work with Case Management, Clinical Staff, Medicaid Vendor, and Family Independence Agency to assist patients and families in completing assistance program applications and determine eligibility and coverage.

  • Notify manager, physician and servicing department of possible delay of service for any elective, urgent admissions, procedures and scheduled diagnostic testing which have not been approved prior to the date of service.

  • Maintain accurate documentation of pre-processing information.

  • Provide assistance to uninsured patients and families in completing and filing Medicaid or assistance program applications with the appropriate agency.

  • Perform all other duties and projects as assigned.

Required Skills:

  • High school diploma is required

  • At least one year of call center experience

  • Attention to detail

  • Strong customer service experience

  • Ability to multi-task and navigate between multiple systems simultaneously

  • Ability to handle a large volume of incoming calls

For this US-based position, the base pay range is $14.76 - $22.48 per hour . Individual pay is determined by role, level, location, job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.

As our Patient Financial Advocate - Financial Counselor Representative , you'll be responsible for counseling uninsured and or under-insured patients to attempt to obtain a paying funding source. You will educate patients on their responsibilities and potential options. You'll be responsible for accurately and compassionately explaining to the patient their financial obligation during their counseling session. In this role, the successful employee must display a strong sense of patient care and attention to detail.

To thrive in this job, you'll need to be a confident multi-tasker who is a quick study with technology, health plans, and the ability to be a liaison between multiple entities. Previous experience as a financial counselor with a background in medical terminology and understanding State and Federal assistance programs is a plus. Since this is a hospital/lab environment, you will need to be prepared to see illness and injuries. You may need to be up to date on all vaccinations (including but not limited to annual flu shot), pass a drug test, and pass a background check prior to hire.

Here's what you can expect working as a Patient Financial Advocate - Financial Counselor Representative:

  • Working on computers and consulting with patients regarding their financial obligation for service. You'll work with an attention to detail, ability to multi-task and navigate between multiple systems simultaneously, develop trust and rapport with patients, and communicate with compassion and authenticity relating to sensitive topics.

  • Helping people who may be very ill or worried. We're not human computers intaking information. Patients need you to be there for them and listen carefully to ease their anxiety regarding financial obligations. You'll build rapport in real time.

While counseling uninsured patients on financial assistant programs, information may seem straightforward, there is a lot of variation in benefit plans and coverage, that will require knowledge you will gain through training.

The Role:

As the Associate Vice President (AVP) of Financial Counseling, you will have focused accountability on regulatory compliance across the system. You will assume a pivotal role encompassing legal coordination, regulatory compliance, strategic decision-making, and leadership. The AVP is accountable for the enterprise-level state and federal regulatory compliance, policies, and procedures, as well as the efficiency and effectiveness of Financial Assistance Programs and the Medicaid submission process for 51 Providence and Affiliate hospitals, over 1,000 physician practices, and Hospice & Homecare services.

Based in our dynamic setting, you will partner with key stakeholders across PSJH to develop and execute plans for financial assistance and health equity. Your leadership will be instrumental in driving innovation, streamlining operations, and enhancing the overall experience for both business and patient constituent groups.

What You'll Do:

Strategic Visionary:

  • Set strategy and standards for Financial Assistance and Financial Counseling programs across all Providence St. Joseph Health ministries.
  • Lead proactive internal auditing to ensure adherence to all federal and state regulations, including IRS 501(r) compliance.

Regulatory Expert:

  • Collaborate closely with Providence Legal and outside counsel to maintain policy compliance and interpret new or draft regulations.
  • Act as an internal and external Subject Matter Expert (SME) on complex, high-risk regulatory matters that impact reputational risk.

Operational Leader:

  • Oversee Patient Financial Counseling functions, including the insourcing of the Medicaid eligibility program and vendor strategy.
  • Set strategic and performance goals for the departments, monitor results, and drive process improvement.

Innovation Driver:

  • Lead and participate in innovation and automation initiatives to improve caregiver workflow and patient experience.
  • Collaborate with Data & Analytics to build PowerBI reports for monitoring processes and overall compliance.

  • Develop and maintain a high-performance team, ensuring staffing levels meet budget, and all staff are fully trained, certified, and empowered to achieve performance and quality targets.

What You'll Bring:

  • Educational Background: Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field; Master's Degree in Business Administration, Healthcare Administration, Public Administration, or a related field preferred.
  • Experience: Minimum of 10 years of experience in a revenue cycle leadership role, with at least 10 years in revenue cycle, financial assistance, and/or financial counseling operations. 5 years of experience in state or federal regulatory matters, including investigations.

Financial Counseling Rep I

The Financial Counselor will be responsible for counseling patients or parties responsible for payment. The Patient Financial Counselor will educate patients on their responsibilities and potential options. The PFC is responsible for accurately and compassionately explaining to the patient their financial obligations during the financial counseling session. In addition, the counselor must obtain any necessary pre-certifications or authorizations and assist with any financing or third-party applications. In this role, the successful candidate must display a strong sense of patient care and attention to detail. Responsibilities:

  • Explain financial responsibilities for services received, payment options and collection procedures to patients or parties responsible for payment.
  • Counsel patients regarding insurance benefits and recommend alternative sources of payment and financial assistance when appropriate.
  • Contact insurance carriers or other sources and act as an advocate for the patient.
  • Initiate process for collecting prepays due and perform follow up activity to insure maximum collection is achieved.
  • Identify hospital, public and private financial assistance programs for patients unable to meet their financial obligations.
  • Work with Case Management, Clinical Staff, Medicaid Vendor, and Family Independence Agency to assist patients and families in completing assistance program applications and determine eligibility and coverage.
  • Notify manager, physician and servicing department of possible delay of service for any elective, urgent admissions, procedures and scheduled diagnostic testing which have not been approved prior to the date of service.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of pre-processing information.
  • Provide assistance to uninsured patients and families in completing and filing Medicaid or assistance program applications with the appropriate agency.
  • Perform all other duties and projects as assigned.
