Responsibilities

The IT Rental Operations Products team is responsible for the development and support of products that provide rental ticketing business capabilities. You will be responsible for implementing enhancement changes, monitoring product health, long and short-term capacity planning, resolving production issues and designing initiatives planned to continue to evolve our services to align with our new API-first strategy. You will work closely with many different client teams such as Greenlight, Frictionless, kiosks, mobile applications, and websites to ensure a consistent experience for our customers. It is a very exciting time to be a part of the team as we continue to evolve in our support and development of new solutions and enable our business to grow through the implementation of new capabilities.

The Engineer 3, Systems is responsible for ensuring the availability, performance, efficiency, change management, monitoring, emergency response, and capacity planning for High Availability (HA) Rental Systems. These systems are a hybrid collection of Cloud, Web Services, and Legacy solutions. The ideal candidate will be experienced with Site Reliability Engineering, incorporating aspects of software engineering and applying them to infrastructure and operations support. This position creates a bridge between development teams and operations by applying a software engineering mindset to system administration topics, and vice versa.

As an Engineer 3, Systems you will be expected to use your technical knowledge to routinely monitor solution health to ensure all rental solutions are meeting established SLAs. You will be called upon to assist with the resolution of production issues that can include performance degradation, capacity concerns, and outage events. In addition, you will be responsible for monitoring and ensuring system health during maintenance events such as patching and upgrades. The eventual comprehension of the complete rental solution ecosystem will be expected to fully participate in problem solving and troubleshooting efforts. We are looking for a talented individual that can serve as a subject matter expert in their area of focus and represent their department on complex assignments. You will be responsible for evaluating elements of technology's effectiveness, research, investigation, and make recommendations for improvements that result in increased solution consistency and reliability.

Required :

About The Role

We're looking for a Principal Software Engineer who is passionate about technology and innovative engineering, with a proven track record of exceptional delivery. In this role, you will design and implement key components of our trading systems, in collaboration with the rest of the Platform Engineering team, and our Infrastructure team, SREs, and other software engineering teams.

The right candidate will bring deep and relevant experience of proposing, designing, and implementing enterprise-grade systems in Java and related technologies. This role will encompass a variety of critical services and will include responsibility for both crafting a forward-looking platform roadmap, as well as delivering on that vision. This is very much a hands-on technical role and will appeal to technology purists.

You will collaborate with other technologists in New York and Calgary to help position BIDS for the next decade of growth.

Responsibilities

  • Design and deliver significant enhancements to key Java-based services within our trading systems.
  • Re-engineer applications to modernize architecture and leverage cloud (AWS) services, improving operational capabilities including scalability, resiliency, and observability.
  • Contribute to the evolution of the firm's SDLC and surrounding tooling and processes.
  • Implement test harnesses and automation to improve test coverage.
  • Constantly challenge yourself and the team for continuous improvement.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Deep and broad experience in software engineering: 10+ years designing, implementing, and refactoring complex systems in Java in a real-time trading environment.
  • High level of proficiency in SQL, Linux, and Bash.
  • Expert knowledge of FIX messaging and FIX engines
  • Extensive experience building high-performance, scalable, transactional systems, and with related messaging architectures and persistence patterns.
  • Deep knowledge of capital markets, as well as familiarity of order and trade lifecycles in at least one asset class
  • Passionate about building distributed systems and comfortable learning new languages and frameworks.
  • Skilled at problem-solving, both big-picture architectural and detailed technical issues.
  • Understanding of design trade-offs, especially around non-functional requirements such as security, performance, maintainability, testability, and resilience.
  • Experience with automated testing tools such as JUnit.
  • Experience using debuggers and profilers to diagnose and fix problems.
  • Experience using source control management systems such as Git in a continuous integration environment.
  • The successful candidate will have excellent analytical skills, attention to detail, and an ability to work collaboratively and communicate effectively within a cross functional team environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Cloud native development using the AWS technology stack.
  • Experience building and deploying Spring Boot based microservices.
  • Exposure to Kotlin and/or other JVM languages.

  • Golang Proficiency Strong, production-level experience writing and optimizing Go microservices (concurrency, error handling, testing).
  • Microservices & API Design Demonstrated ability to design robust RESTful and/or event-driven architectures, including versioning and throttling strategies.
  • Infrastructure as Code & DevOps Experience with Terraform or CloudFormation plus CI/CD pipelines (e.g. GitLab, Jenkins) to automate build/deploy processes.
  • Security & Compliance Savvy Solid understanding of AWS security best practices (VPCs, KMS, IAM roles) and compliance frameworks (SOC2, HIPAA, GDPR).
  • Leadership & Communication Excellent at translating complex technical designs into business terms, leading cross-functional teams, and driving architectural decisions.
