Sr. Automation Engineer

Position Purpose:

The role is responsible for supporting the plant utilities as a technical resource in Building Management System Automation in all matters related to the establishment and operation of the utility systems for the Kankakee facility.

This role includes system diagnostics, programming and troubleshooting PLC systems, implementing and commissioning BAS/BMS (Metasys) systems, configuring and troubleshooting drives for HVAC and plant utility systems.

This individual will work closely with Utility Engineering, Global Engineering, Manufacturing Plant, Quality, Safety, Utility Operations and Maintenance team.

The role is required to be onsite during core business hours Monday through Friday. Occasional extended-hour, after-hour, weekend, holiday and shutdown work may be required in support of the 24/7 operating plant. Job Description:

1) Accountable for developing strategies and ensuring reliability processes exist for site utility control systems and equipment.

  • Monitor, generate and complete the periodic review, master plan for the automation engineering program.
  • Develop equipment documentation to meet GMP requirements, i.e.: URS, FAT, Equipment IQ/OQ, PM, SOPs.
  • Implement engineering standards and best practices

2) Support Capital Projects and the integration of new equipment/technologies to the utilities and manufacturing plant.

  • Conceptual Design, Scope and cost estimate development, business case development, detailed design, engineering and validation documentation and project execution
  • Implement continuous improvements to enhance safety, system reliability, and productivity (i.e., reduced plant utilities usage, etc.)

3) Develop and implement programs and control strategies to improve processes and overall equipment efficiency.

  • Identify and drive improvement opportunities associated with automation equipment
  • Program, configure, and troubleshoot PLC systems, human-machine interfaces (HMIs) and automation devices to ensure proper operation and integration with existing equipment.
  • Conduct routine diagnostics, identifying and resolving programming or control issues.
  • Analyze operational process problems and recommend appropriate corrective and preventative actions.
  • Automation System spare parts management

4) Subject Matter Expert for all automation activities

  • Regulatory Audits
  • Operations and Maintenance Support (24 x 7 Onsite/On Call Operational Support)
  • Change Control
  • Validation

5) Accountable for all aspects of Johnson Controls Metasys for Validated Environments software configuration tools and Rockwell Automation Control Systems. Understands coordination and communication protocols between platforms such as Allen Bradley, MODBUS, BACNet, etc.

6) Provide technical coaching and consultation to other automation engineers and facilitate shared learning forums.

7) Demonstrate continuous improvement with respect to increasing job knowledge and proficiency related to biopharmaceutical industry engineering best practices and technologies, as well as technical understanding/problem solving capability.

8) Complies with requirements from CSL Behring's Safety Program, including Health and Safety mandates and OSHA requirements.

9) Completes any other duties/responsibilities assigned by senior management.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering preferred or B.S. degree in an Engineering related field.
  • Master's Degree and 2 years of Engineering experience
  • 8+ years of relevant automation/controls experience in pharmaceutical or biopharmaceutical based GMP manufacturing operations
  • Proficient in BAS/BMS programming or mechanical HVAC control experience
  • Experience with one or more of the following platforms: Johnson Controls, Schneider Electric, Tridium Niagara, Honeywell, Rockwell, Siemens, etc
  • Experience programming, troubleshooting, and maintaining site data historian, preferably OSI PI.
  • Strong knowledge of industrial automation systems, including HMIs, variable frequency drives (VFDs), and motor control systems.
  • Knowledge of utility systems cGMP and FDA regulated environments.
  • Knowledge of building management and HVAC systems.
  • Experience with Quality Management and Change Control Systems.
  • Knowledge of computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS).
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work in collaborative and independent work situations and environments with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to interpret and apply GAMPs and GMPs and familiarity with documentation in a highly regulated environment with requirements such as 21 CFR Part 11, ASTM 2500, S88, and S95
  • Demonstrated ability to manage contractors, while interfacing with multiple departments, working with internal customers to manage projects.
  • Computer skills: MS Project and AutoCAD.

The expected base salary range for this position at hiring is $96,000 - $121,000. Please note this salary range reflects the minimum and maximum base pay that CSL expects to pay for this position at the listed location as of the time of this posting. Individual base salary for a successful candidate is determined by qualifications, skill level, experience, competencies and other relevant factors. In addition to base salary, total compensation for this role may also include incentive compensation and equity.

The Automation Engineer will assist in development, fabrication, programming, install, documentation, and support of automated manufacturing equipment across sites in the Toro network. Systems supported will include industrial robots, cobots, and AGV's/AMR's, smart tools, run-up tables and other automated or "smart" equipment.

What Will You Do?

In order to grow and build a successful career with The Toro Company, you will be responsible for:

  • Specification, design, integration, programming, installation and troubleshooting of automated manufacturing equipment and systems to support fabrication, weld, paint, assembly and testing of finished goods.

  • Help develop, deploy, and maintain documentation and software for equipment including schematics, maintenance spares lists, and operating instructions, and programs and other software.

  • Collaborate with other sites to evaluate existing equipment for opportunities to upgrade for data acquisition, increased automation, efficiency, or additional functionality.

  • Maintain development project budgets and inventory

  • Consult or assist in modification of existing equipment to optimize performance or integrate new features

  • Develop or assist in development of capital requests for projects

  • Manage system development, optimization, and support projects effectively. Frequently report verbally and in writing on project status

  • Provide formal and informal technical training to production associates, site mechatronics leads, and other staff as necessary

  • Support manufacturing lines by providing technical troubleshooting of automated equipment

  • Stay informed of new industrial technology and report how it can be utilized in the plant

  • Other duties as assigned.

Preferred experience:

  • Experience in Ladder-Logic programming, Rockwell systems software, Unitronics programming preferred

What Do You Need?

To be considered for this role, an individual should meet the following minimal requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree or higher in Electromechanical Engineering, Automation Engineering, Electrical Engineering or similar discipline

  • Engineer I-0-2 or more years' experience in automated systems development and integration required

  • Engineer II-2+-4 or more years' experience in automated systems development and integration required

  • Engineer III-5+ years' experience in automated systems development and integration required

  • Working knowledge of automated electrical systems including electrical wiring, control circuits, programming, troubleshooting, etc.

  • Working knowledge of industrial electrical systems including AC standard and servo motor drives, PLC integration, electromechanical control circuits involving pneumatic and hydraulic components

  • Experience with computer drafting software such as AutoCAD, Creo Parametric, Creo View, Windchill or similar.

  • Knowledge of automation, electrical, and safety compliance codes

  • Periodic travel up to 40% may be required for installation or support of systems.

  • Flexible hours to cover off-hours support.

  • Strong mechanical aptitude. Desire to learn new skills and maintain knowledge of new technologies

  • Must be independent, self-motivated, and open to technical mentoring. Must have interpersonal skills in working with a variety of cross-functional teams

Requirements

  • Adaptive software process models experience and/or training
  • Software development and support experience with DEC Fortran, DEC C programming languages on OpenVMS operating systems
  • Software development and support experience with .NET programming languages on Windows OS
  • Database knowledge, experienced with Microsoft SQL Server/T-SQL programming skills
  • Familiarity with virtual environments, e.g., VMware, preferred
