Amy F. Loperfido & Associates, insurance staff counsel for State Farm Insurance Companies, is seeking a Legal Secretary to join the Philadelphia Claim Litigation office. While every day can provide different experiences and opportunities, a typical day as a Legal Secretary involves supporting attorneys with calendaring and scheduling, processing mail, and electronic/paper filing. The office allows for collaborative environments with access to peer mentors. This role provides diversity of work and the opportunity for development/advancement. This role will interact with clients, courts, and counsel throughout the litigation process on behalf of the attorney. The position is classified as a hybrid role, meaning that the work arrangement calls for hours in the office and virtually. Everyone in a hybrid role is required to spend time in the office. Work arrangements could change over time based on business needs. Hours for the position are Monday-Friday 8:30am - 5:00pm.

LOCATION: 1500 Market Street, Suite 2400 Centre Square West, Philadelphia, PA 19102

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to

  • Apply specialized knowledge of legal procedures
  • Calendar management, processing mail, electronic/paper filing in all five surrounding counties
  • Schedule litigation events, including depositions, mediations and hearings

Qualifications

Previous experience required

  • 2+ years of recent civil defense litigation secretarial experience preferably in insurance defense or personal injury
  • Prior experience in electronic and paper filing preferrable in the five surrounding counties (Philadelphia, Delaware, Chester, Montgomery, Bucks)

Key Skills required

  • Calendaring and scheduling experience within a legal environment
  • Strong organizational skills, prioritizing urgent and non-urgent tasks (items with deadlines, handling demands), multitasking
  • E-filing experience
  • Knowledge of legal and medical terminology, local and state rules regarding pleadings and pre-trial matters, deadlines, and filing requirement (strongly preferred)
  • Ability to adapt to a corporate law environment
  • Strong written and oral communication skills (proofreading, attention to detail, formatting)
  • Accurate typing skills

Technology/software experience required

  • Working knowledge of PA electronic filing system
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
  • Working knowledge of Case Management system
  • Working knowledge of Document Storage system

Aviation Crew Scheduling Specialist/Paralegal

The Air Line Pilots Association, International (ALPA), the largest airline pilot union in the world and the largest non-governmental aviation safety organization in the world (representing over 80,000 pilots at 43 U.S. and Canadian airlines) seeks an experienced Paralegal for our office in Memphis, Tennessee. Under general supervision and within the limitations of Association policy, the Paralegal provides contractual and legal research support and assists in the analysis of contractual disputes, with particular focus on assuring pilot schedules and assignments are consistent with contractual requirements. They work closely with MEC officers, representatives, and committee volunteers to assist in gathering information and evidence in order to review and analyze potential contract issues and support and assist in the development of strategies and tactics for resolution. They interact with pilot members to assess whether potential disputes exist under the collective bargaining agreement and, if so, support pilot efforts to informally resolve the dispute with management while also handling contractual appeals of disputes that are not resolved earlier in the resolution process, including the subsequent processing of cases to the System Board of Adjustment. The Paralegal also provides assistance to Labor Relations Counsel in the preparation and presentation of cases at the Board and the research and drafting of post-hearing briefs. They also provide support and assistance in the preparation and processing of Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) enforcement cases at all stages, up to and including appeals and filing appeal briefs. Individual responsibility and administrative ability are both required to ensure that tasks are carried out as assigned and important deadlines are met.

Travel : 10 - 40 %.

Minimum Requirements:

  • High school diploma required; Bachelor's degree in relevant area, e.g., English, Paralegal Studies, Political Science, Pre-Law, or related field, from an accredited college or university preferred; or, the equivalent combination of education and practical experience.
  • (2) years of paralegal experience preferred or similar work experience such as airline crew scheduling.
  • Paralegal Certificate required.
  • Labor law experience strongly preferred.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, oral and written, for effective interaction with internal staff, external contacts, and pilots.
  • Understanding of pilot contracts, corporate practices, and Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs)/Canadian Aviation Regulations (CARs) preferred.
  • Knowledge of pilot scheduling and work rules preferred.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Able to work independently and to be proactive in identifying and responding to issues and problems.
  • Software: Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint required; SharePoint preferred.
